Biography
Syed Ahsan is a Consultant Cardiologist and Heart Rhythm Specialist at New Victoria Hospital. He is also a Consultant Cardiologist at Barts Heart Centre, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, one of the largest specialist cardiac units in the world. He is an expert in managing patients with a range of cardiac symptoms and conditions and has a special interest in heart rhythm disorders.
Dr Ahsan is one of the clinical leads for atrial fibrillation at Barts Heart Centre. He uses the latest technologies and is a highly experienced operator in performing catheter ablations for all heart rhythm disorders including atrial fibrillation. He is a specialist in implanting all types of cardiac devices including pacemakers, defibrillators and CRT devices.
Dr Ahsan was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Heart Hospital, University College London Hospital in 2013 and moved to the Barts Heart Centre in May 2015 following the merger of the two hospitals. He also established the first cardiac ablation service in North London for the local population in 2014.
Syed graduated from Guys Kings and St Thomas’ Medical School in 2000 with a First Class Honours degree in his BSc. He undertook his cardiology specialist training at various prestigious hospitals in London where he worked alongside world-renowned experts. These include the Royal Brompton Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Heart Hospital (UCL) where he undertook his fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology and devices.
His postgraduate medical doctorate was awarded from University College London and evaluated strategies to optimise outcomes in patients with cardiac rhythm devices. His pioneering research work was awarded the Royal Society of Medicine National Prize in 2009 and was presented nationally and internationally in Europe and the USA. He has been a finalist in two national young investigator awards.
Dr Ahsan maintains a research interest in the area of atrial fibrillation. He is leading on a new minimally invasive hybrid technique, in collaboration with cardiac surgeons, to offer patients with long standing atrial fibrillation a novel treatment option.
Dr Ahsan is passionate about training and leads the heart rhythm management training programme at Barts and the Royal Society of Medicine.
Dr Ahsan prides himself on placing the patient at the heart of his approach. He takes the time to make a complete and thorough assessment taking particular care to explain all aspects of the condition and treatment options to his patients ensuring that patients are fully informed and involved in all aspects of their care.
