Biography
Dr. Shanmugam is a Consultant Cardiologist at St George's University Hospital, London, and holds the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Molecular and Clinical Sciences Research Institute at St George's University of London.
At St George’s University Hosiptal, Dr. Shanmugam serves as:
- Clinical Lead for Heart Failure
- Clinical Lead for CRT Optimisation services
- Clinical Lead for Cardiac Sarcoidosis
- Co-Lead for Heart Failure: South London Heart Failure Training Programme
Dr. Shanmugam graduated from King’s College, University of London with a 1st Class BSc honours degree in 1998. His extensive training includes completion of the South West London Cardiology rotation and specialist cardiology training in April 2013. Dr. Shanmugam further developed his expertise through an international fellowship at the National Heart Centre/Duke-NUS Singapore, focusing on Device Therapy and Advanced Cardiac Imaging.
Dr. Shanmugam has expertise in general cardiology, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and heart failure management. He also has a special interest in promoting healthy lifestyle and nutrition for heart disease prevention. He has made significant contributions to numerous national and international peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Shanmugam played a role in the development and establishment of the first national Heart Failure Unit in the UK, in 2016. This unit provides specialised care to admitted patients with heart failure, encompassing nursing, therapy, and cardiology services. Notably, the Heart Failure team received a nomination at the prestigious 2017 British Medical Journal Awards for the Cardiology Team of the Year award.
