Biography
Dr Gill McCarthy is a Consultant Physician with over 30 years experience in Sexual Health & HIV.
She qualified from the Royal Free Hospital and undertook general medicine training in London and Bristol followed by training in General Practice and then speciality training in Sexual Health & HIV at Chelsea Westminster and University College London hospitals. In 1995 Dr McCarthy was appointed as a consultant at Kingston Hospital and founded the highly regarded Sexual Health & HIV service at the Wolverton Centre there.
Dr McCarthy has extensive experience of managing with a wide range of genital conditions and infections in both men and women. Some infections are sexually transmitted but many are not. She has a subspecialty interest in genital skin conditions (dermatology) and painful conditions affecting the genital area such as vulvodynia. To the individual many of these conditions present as soreness, itch or irritation or pain with sex. All genital conditions can cause significant personal distress and also impact on relationships and all these aspects are considered within the consultation process.
Dr McCarthy has edited national guidelines in sexual health as a member of the British Association of Sexual Health & HIV (BASHH) Clinical Effectiveness Group and has taught extensively on all aspects of Sexual Health and HIV.
Apart from her clinical practice Dr McCarthy held several senior management posts at Kingston Hospital and was Clinical Director of the Sexual Health & HIV service until 2020. She is passionate about Medical Education and training the doctors of the future. She was College Tutor for Medicine and then Director of Medical Education responsible for the training of 230 junior doctors.
Dr McCarthy retired from Kingston Hospital at the end of 2020 and is now providing a clinical service at the New Victoria Hospital combined with other roles in medical education.

- Diagnosis and management of all male and female STIs and genital infections including recurrent thrush, BV, herpes and warts
- Genital skin conditions and skin biopsy
- Male and female genital pain conditions (e.g. vulvodynia/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome)
- Sexual difficulties and painful sex
- HIV testing and HIV management
