Biography
Professor Mohamed "Mo" Imam is a fully trained Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon, specialised in both surgical and non-surgical treatment of the upper limb.
He was awarded multiple distinctive international awards and travelling fellowships. He has completed two Degree level theses including a PhD on the healing of rotator cuff tendons tears and successfully filed patents.
After the completion of his specialist training, he undertook upper limb fellowships at distinguished centres of excellence both in Europe and the US. He is a professor and chief Medical officer at the Smart Health Unit, University of East London, leading research on the clinical applications of artificial intelligence and machine intelligence in surgery. He is the founder of multiple international initiatives, including the Ortho-Globe initiative and others.
Prof Imam performs major shoulder tendon repair, reconstruction, tendon transfers, joint preservation, joint replacement, cartilage regeneration, and tendon degeneration and tears. He undertakes modern Joint replacement surgery of the upper limb in patients with advanced arthritis where joint preservation is impossible. He offers total and partial replacement of the joints, including computer navigation and bespoke shape-matched surgery. He operates, using evidence-based practice, on different pathologies in the upper limb. He developed various techniques and modified others that he learned from different pioneers during his fellowships.
His practice's ethos is to provide high-quality, patient-centred care while tailoring each patient's treatment based on the best available evidence, which may include surgical or non-operative treatment. He is competent in all aspects of upper limb surgery. Professor Imam uses the latest technology in diagnosing different upper limb pathologies.
Professor Imam edited a reference book on the clinical applications of stem cells in orthopaedics and currently editing a textbook on shoulder injuries, an Atlas for shoulder surgery and a textbook on arm problems for GPs and physiotherapists. He published more than 120 publications including seminal papers, book chapters and patents. He serves as a chief investigator in national and international trials.
